1/11/2019 SCHOOL SAFETY 101 with Director of School Safety Mark Hannan and School Safety Officer Tiffany LuboldRead NowWe have approximately 1575 students that go to our schools each day. Safety is of utmost importance. For this reason, the PTO was excited to have both Director of School Safety Mark Hannan as well as School Safety Officer Tiffany Lubold as our guest speakers at our January 10th meeting. At the meeting, we learned that safety starts with transportation, both on school buses and crossing the street (with the help of the SH village crossing guards). Each building has its own unique challenges. SES especially has more civilians around the building as well as traffic concerns, given the school's proximity to Main Street. Sometimes, especially in the elementary school, custody issues become intense. Therefore, the school must be very strict with knowing who is coming through the front door and making sure that it is not someone who is prohibited from being around the elementary students. Are you frustrated with the past year's increased security? The scrutiny at the front desk? Not being able to walk your child to their classroom? Don't be. The school just needs to ensure that whoever is near the students will not harm them and that there is no chaos in the hallway to prevent our children's teachers from teaching and keeping our children safe. The school needs to ensure that school staff are able to detect suspicious behavior. Have you seen the Southampton Village Police Department's new K-9 yet? We haven't but we hear that he will soon be getting familiar with the school so that the police department can know how the school buildings work and where the hiding spots would be if God forbid there is ever an emergency. Officer Lubold has been with the Southampton Police for 8 years and is now working a Monday through Friday schedule so that she can get into the classroom and help students full time. Not only is she keeping our children safe by maintaining a police presence at the school (so that the public knows that we are not a soft target), but she is a resource to all of the children. She is meant to also be a resource to the teachers and school counselors. Her role is not a disciplinary role. She is not at the school to make arrests. If something violates school policy, she doesn't handle it, that stays within the school administration. Officer Lubold has started a 10 week D.A.R.E curriculum and already implemented the course in kindergarten and fourth grade. Soon, she will also be starting in 6th grade.
School safety is always a concern for us parents. We cannot let our children attend a school which is unsafe and unsettling. Which is why, I always try to scan the place before enrolling my children. I look at how the school is structured, the layout of the building and other stuff. I also look at their recent incidents, I think that we should always look at these to better understand their nature. From what I can see, you have a very safe school.
